The steps involved in a hematuria evaluation typically include:
Medical History
The healthcare provider will conduct a detailed medical history, including asking about the duration and frequency of hematuria, associated symptoms, previous episodes, relevant medical conditions, medications, and family history.
Physical Examination
A comprehensive physical examination will be performed to assess for any signs or symptoms that may suggest the underlying cause of hematuria.
Urine Tests
Urinalysis
A urine sample will be collected and analyzed using urinalysis to determine the presence of blood, red blood cells, and other potential indicators of kidney or bladder abnormalities.
Urine Culture
If a urinary tract infection is suspected, a urine culture may be performed to identify the presence of bacteria and determine appropriate antibiotic treatment.
Imaging Studies
Ultrasound
An ultrasound examination may be conducted to assess the kidneys, bladder, and other parts of the urinary tract for any structural abnormalities, stones, or tumors.
CT Scan

Cystoscopy
In some cases, a cystoscopy may be recommended. This procedure involves inserting a thin tube with a camera (cystoscope) into the urethra and bladder to directly visualize the interior of the urinary tract. It allows for the detection of bladder abnormalities, such as tumors, inflammation, or structural issues.
Additional Tests
Depending on the findings from the initial evaluation, further tests may be ordered to investigate specific conditions. These may include blood tests, such as kidney function tests or tumor markers, and more specialized imaging studies like magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or intravenous pyelogram (IVP).
