Foreskin is the redundant skin on the penis that covers the glans or head of the penis and it can become a problem. This skin can potentially become too tight, causing phimosis, or if it’s already too tight and gets forced back, it causes paraphimosis. In either of these conditions, there can be pain, infection, and difficulty maintaining good hygiene. There are also circumstances where a male may prefer to have the skin removed for cosmetic reasons. The removal of the skin is called a circumcision. For some males, this is done as a newborn, or for others, later in life when they develop a problem or electively decide to have circumcision. This procedure can be done in the office with a local anesthetic or in an operating room under general anesthesia. The decision as to how to proceed will be determined after a discussion with your treating urologist.  Post-operatively, there may be swelling, bruising and some mild pain.  There will be sutures present which fall off spontaneously around 2-4 weeks.  Patients can carefully shower the next day and are advised to cover the incision with antibiotic ointment and a dry dressing for at least the 1st week.
